UTEP Student Success Project funded by Lumina
This research is designed to provide a clearer understanding of the key factors involved in postsecondary success within a Latino-majority student population. Through in-depth research analysis, this project has expanded our knowledge base on retention and graduation challenges, and will continue to explore strategies for improving student success at UTEP.
Revised Carnegie Foundation Classifications & Implications for UTEP
In late 2005 and 2006, the Carnegie Foundation restructured its Classification of Institutions of Higher Education and used new information to classify American universities and colleges. We examined information about the new classification scheme and analyzed UTEP’s new classifications in the context of our current and aspirational peer institutions. Read our analysis here.

Mission and Purpose of Public Universities
Historical documents about the establishment of public and land grant universities offer an illuminating perspective about the mission and purpose of public universities that resonates today. How do today’s public institutions look in comparison to the original goals regarding access, service, and research? In a recent project, we examined the elements that contributed to the development, and shift away, from the original mission of public universities. We began our study by extracting the original elements and values of the land-grant and public university through our readings of primary and secondary sources by the original architects. Then we analyzed how those elements relate to higher education today—elements such as “access for all” and “practical diffusion of knowledge”—for large public universities and for UTEP as well.

Analysis of Education Trust’s Model and Findings
We examined the Education Trust report Choosing to Improve: Voices from Colleges and Universities with Better Graduation Rates (Carey, 2005), which communicates Ed Trust’s findings from its College Results Online resource. In our report, we analyze Education Trust’s model, methodology, and its policy implications. Read our analysis here.

Alternative Rankings in Higher Education
For the past three years, Washington Monthly has published an alternative set of measures for ranking colleges to the ones used by larger, more highly publicized magazines. The components of the Washington Monthly analysis redefine the notion of excellence in two ways: First, they recognize institutions that offer educational opportunities to a wider spectrum of students than those serving a traditional population. Second, they acknowledge institutions’ service by students and alumni who serve their communities. In 2006, our research team studied the methodology used by Washington Monthly and compared UTEP’s measures on social mobility, research, and service with a small set of peers.
